Tips on crating

Postby southboca » 14 Mar 2007 03:59

One of our dogs hates her crate. She's pretty noisy, but we've found that if we sacrafice a worn T-shirt that, she is a bit calmer. My husband thinks that it comforts her because it smells like us. I think that she's happy because she has something that smells like us that she can destroy. "Leave me alone in a crate, huh? I'll show you...." :D

I had a Rotty that didn't like her crate and I tried everything, for almost a year. I finally gave up and let her sleep on our bedroom floor with her own bed and never had a problem again! She would even go to bed without us, once she got used to the fact that she wasn't going to be put back in the crate. We found that we were able to close our dogs off in our bedroom while we were away, with toys and the tv on, and they were fine.

If she is in the crate for hours at a time while you work, do you take her for walks and spend time with her when you aren't working, or do you bring your work home? She may be objecting to the fact that she isn't getting enough attention. You have my sympathies, a dog who isn't happy makes for people who aren't happy! Good luck!
