Foods high in calcium and vitamin D, and physical activity reduce the risk of osteoporosis. The National Dairy Council has acknowledged the amended health claim proposed by the Food and Drug Administration to effectively communicate to the consumers the importance calcium, vitamin D and physical activity. According to Ann Marie Krautheim, registered dietitian and senior Vice President of NDC said that the simplified language would help to communicate the importance of three daily serving of dairy products to obtain calcium and vitamin D nutrients and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. The study also recognizes the importance of regular physical activity in cutting the risk of osteoporosis. This health claim, which shows the importance of calcium and vitamin D in reducing the risk of osteoporosis, will draw attention to milk as one of the richest dietary sources of calcium and vitamin D for building strong bones in kids and teens, and providing the best defense against developing osteoporosis at a later stage. Though calcium supplements and calcium fortified beverages can be taken along with milk if your milk intake is less, they cannot offer the milk's unique nutrients. sankarapandian

I have also heard that healthy bones are imporant to support so many other functions - so focusing on keeping them strong has a multitude of other positive effects beyond the bones.

I love cheese and milk and have them fairly often. I have never ever had a fractured bone and I think I am very healthy that way. But thanks for the posting. It is interesting to know!

That's very interesting, everyone in my family are huge cheese fans and none of us have ever had a broken bone. Always seemed an odd coincidence but perhaps it's not.
