I don't know why, but the difference between 'depuis' and 'pendant' (words for 'since' or 'for') has always been confusing to me.  So I thought I'd write about it to solidify the difference in my head (and to hopefully help others out there who are as confused as I was!).

'Depuis' is used to talk about an action that hasn't stopped yet.

Je joue de la guitare depuis longtemps.
I have been playing the guitar for a long time.

Il travaille pour cette entreprise depuis 1990.
He has been working for this company since 1990.

'Pendant', on the other hand, is used to express an action that has completed.

Il n'a rien mangé pendant une semaine.
He ate nothing for a week.

Je t'ai attendu pendant une heure.
I waited for you for an hour.

Voilà. Ce n'est pas trop difficile!
