Having experienced my first collision with a deer on my bike, I can attest that it is a definite eye opening experience. It happened to me last month just south of Roundup on the road to Billings .. I came upon two deer just at dusk while traveling at 75mph. I caught the tail end of the second deer, and although I didn't lay the bike down, there was about $2400 damage. After contact, I wobbled a bit, slowed down, turned around and picked up the pieces, after which I called the insurance company. Interestingly enough, as I'm picking up the pieces, a car drives by on the opposite side of the road, right over some of the pieces (crunch crunch) and keeps on going...thanks a lot for stopping to see if I was okay! When I got to the Harley dealer in Billings for an estimate the next day, I find out that there have been several recent deer crashes, and one death incurred due to them this season. All told this year, in the Billings area we had 12 Harley deer crashes ... no idea how many other bikes. I'm a lot more cautious now, especially at dusk ... part of my problem was I still had my daylight goggles on, and it had reduced my vision somewhat...I've corrected that by getting some Day/Night Panoptics, which I highly recommend. I also recommend getting an engine crash guard, mine probably saved my leg in my crash, and I wouldn't ride without one.
