I understand why this is done - to adjust the amount o fweight on the tires so they all last longer - but is this really true? Does it work? Is it necessary? do you do it?

It's not so much for the weight but the wear pattern. Front tires wear differently than rear ones, because of the turning. It helps your tires last longer.

I did it every 6 months with my RAV4, and the tires lasted like 5 years! It was pretty good. I had all year tires, and it was the best way to keep them in excellent condition.

It does extend the wear, safer to driver, and it's cheaper in the long run. Definitely worth doing.

It increases the life of tires as well as it is also necessary for safety point of view.
