When I was trying to get pregnant, I was a little underweight. One of my doctors suggested that I might have an eating disorder. My husband was with me and he burst out laughing. When I'm not hungry, I don't eat. When I am, I can outeat my husband and have a paunch to prove it til the next day. We had just come from an all-you-can-eat sushi lunch. We'd been hiking in the mountains before that, so I'd put away a lot of food. The doctor tested me for worms instead. I came up negative for that too.

Everytime I go in to see a new doctor, I always know what they will test me for: Anemia -- my skin has a yellowish tone. I've had about 10 tests and my iron count always come back above average. An eating disorder was a new one, however. And rather ironic, since I follow the advice that most doctors give you: Eat healthy food. Eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full. If I exercise a lot, I eat a lot. If I don't, I'm not hungry, so I don't eat as much. One of my exboyfriends, who actually counted calories, was astounded. My daily intake can range from 3,500 calories (when I was hiking uphill all day) to 1,000 (when we hung around the house and watched movies.) For me it's not a conscious effort, it's just natural.

Perhaps they see so few people who are healthy and taking their advice that they don't recognise it! I have a friend who will eat like a pig one day and then not eat anything but snacks for two or three days. She's not starving she's just not hungry.

Actually I am of the view that you should consume regular food and instead of taking one heavy diet one day and fast on the other day.
